A molecule that can redevelop optic nerves

To persuade the nerves for rejuvenating itself after injuries is the biggest challenge before Neuroscience. Now scientists have discovered a highly effective molecule that can redevelop the optic nerves of rats.

During the experiment, the researchers placed a protein with earlier unknown growth-promoting properties into the eye fluid of rats whose optic nerves had been crushed. The journal Nature Neuroscience reported that rats’ optic nerves were stimulated to re grow by several millimeters.

The researchers hope that this experimentation can go on to help people suffering from damage to the optic nerve. Moreover, this study can lead to the spinal-cord injuries as well. The next steps will be to see effect of the protein on other types of nerve cells and its side effects on Brain.
