Whale Hunt: The never-ending argument between Japan and Australia

Whale Hunt

Whale hunt is a major environmental issue throughout the world. It’s a long time that Australia is leading a global effort in forcing Japan, to stop its annual whale hunt in the Antarctic Ocean. On the other hand, Japan has not yet shown a single sign, even about rethinking over the matter. For Japan, whaling is a cherished tradition and it allows only an annual “scientific” whale hunt. In spite of all these international pressure, this commercial whaling took home 551 minke whale this year.

So isn’t all these argument harming inter-personal relationship between the two? On asking this, Kevin Rudd, the Australian Prime Minister clarifies that very soon both the countries are going to discuss and find out a solution for the controversy. But disputes among friends are common and its not going to affect their good relationship. Recently Rudd was in a five-day-visit to Japan and he discussed many important issues with the Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda. On the last day of the visit he told the reporters that of course they will talk over the whaling issue further, but their friendship will not come to an end. Rather, the two countries are planning to strengthen the security and economic partnership. Fukuda has also supported Rudd’s plan for an Asia-Pacific Community just like the European Union by the year 2020.

We must not forget here that Japan and Australia share a major economic dependency since a long time. This really sounds bigger than the single whale-hunt issue.
