Unpredictable weather makes Indonesian farmers wary

With each passing year the weather in Indonesia is becoming more and more unpredictable and this changing pattern are severely affecting its farmers. For ages Java’s rice fields come alive each morning and farmers get down to their work to make their crops more rewarding. But now something strange is happening and once well calculated harvest has become very irregular. However, what is causing these changes is still unclear?

Over the years the harvests have become so irregular that it has become a matter of great concern. Earlier Indonesian farmers used to get two to three harvests each year after taking accounts of weather conditions but now things are altogether different.

Agus Purnomo Senior adviser to Indonesia’s environment minister said:

The climate change issue is more perceived as an international issue rather than a domestic issue.

Even today many Indonesian farmers are small-scale farmers and they sow and harvest their crops according to the stars, or with the first few drops of rain. But this year their crops have been washed away by heavy rains that caused massive floods. All this happened because these farmers failed to read the ominous weather signs.

These bizarre condition have also divided scientists in two categories One of them believes that these changes occurring because of climate change, while the other are the view that the changing are occurring due to some other reasons.

A local woman said:

People here don’t talk about climate change. I have read it somewhere in a book or in a newspaper, but I don’t really know what it means.

Indonesia has 17,000 islands and a unique biodiversity but now all this is under threat due to rising sea levels and changing climate.
