Tianjin Eco-city envisions green future amid huge investments

In another ten to twelve years, China will be the home to a socially harmonious, eco-friendly and resource-conserving conurbation, dubbed the Tianjin Eco-City. The Sino-Singapore eco-project aims to achieve balanced and sustainable development while ensuring the availability of basic amenities and lowest possible carbon emissions. The concept-city has won acclaims worldwide and is attracting huge investments. Yesterday, Japan’s largest eco-friendly developer, Mitsui Fudosan Co. Ltd., joined in with a $644 million aid to build a high-end waterfront residential community in the eco-city in the Binhai New Area.

Entire construction follows the KPI’s:

The developers will make it sure that the construction and further progress follows the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) strictly. The KPIs refer to national standards in China and Singapore. Some of these are enlisted below:

I. China’s National Ambient Air Quality Grade II Standard for air quality should be met for at least 310 days.
II. Developers will ensure the supply of potable water in line with PRC and international standards. Non-traditional sources such as desalination and recycled water will provide 50 % potable water to the city. tianjin eco city 1
III. The carbon emission per unit GDP in the Eco-city should not exceed 150 ton-C per US$1 million.
IV. Green Building Standards should be paid heed to, strictly. As per the arrangements made, 20% of housing in the Eco-city by 2013 will be subsidized.
V. Extensive greenery will be a distinctive feature of the Eco-city, with lush green spaces and recreational spaces sensitively interspersed throughout the city.
VI. The eco-city will promote clean transportation in the form of green trips by 2020. At least 90 per cent of the trips within the Eco-city will be via walking, cycling or use of public transport.
VII. Eco-city will implement integrated waste management with particular emphasis on the “3Rs” – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
VIII. Eco-city will make use of renewable energy i.e. geothermal energy, hydropower and solar power. At least 15% of the energy utilized should be renewable.
IX. Half of the Eco-city’s residents should be provided employment within the city itself. It will allow them to commute less on a daily basis.
X. The Eco-city should have 100% barrier-free access. It’s done to cater to the needs of the elderly and the mobility-impaired.
XI. Eco-city won’t interfere with the local heritage. It includes retention of Ji Canal, a canal with 1,000 years of history. Adaptive reuse or partial rebuilding will go on to conserve two existing villages within the Eco-city site, Qingtuozi and Wuqi.

If all these objectives are capably realized, it will project itself to be a model to reconcile global climate change and to strengthen the tenets of environmental protection, resource and energy conservation.
