The Spookiest Castle in Scotland

<![CDATA[As more than one third of the Scottish population have claimed to see a ghost, Scotland has been duly named as the Spookiest place on earth. The history of Scotland involves murder, conspiracy, trickery, slaughter and fraud. Scotland has been home to some of the most famous people in the world as well as to some of the devils. The list of famous Scottish personalities includes Alexander Graham Bell, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Kenny Danglish, and Adam Smith. On the other hand, it has unleashed some beasts like the Loch Ness monster, Burke and Hare (demonic soul snatchers), Deacon William Brodie (The real Scottish Jekyll and Hyde), Sawney Bean (most feared Cannibal).

History of the Edinburg Castle:

Edinburg Castle

One of the spookiest Scottish Castles is the Edinburg Castle due to some of the violent deaths, which took place years ago. Mary Queen of Scots and a close friend, David Rizzio, were murdered at the Palace of Holy Roodhouse in Edinburgh. An unknown piper is heard frequently on the way to the castle. The castle is also said to be the home of a number of ghosts and ghouls.

It is said that during some construction work, some workers discovered an entrance to a hidden tunnel. The dark tunnel led them to a deep Castle Rock, on which Edinburgh Castle is built. Fear gripped the workers as none of them agreed to venture into the tunnel and explore it. Finally, it was decided that such an adventure could be carried out by the brave Scottish soldiers and the word for the need of volunteers was spread all across the country.

The Phantom Piper:

What has been the basis of many commercials for a deodorant company many years later, a brave piper came forward to help the soldiers. It was said that he went down into the tunnel and played his pipes so loud that the soldiers above the ground could hear him. The soldiers could hear the piper’s tune and locate his position in the tunnel. As the piper went deep into the tunnel, the light he carried dimmed and the sound of the pipes fainted.

Suddenly halfway down the tunnel the piper disappeared. The soldiers could no longer hear him and the workers could no longer see him. After the incident there was no news about the piper. The workers and the soldiers were so terrified that they sealed the entrance to the tunnel, which remained sealed for a long period. The incident was soon forgotten by all the people including the soldiers and the workers. The story was no longer told to others, as there was no one to carry forward the tale. It so happened that all the workers and the soldiers involved in the mission started to disappear one by one. In a span of a few days there were no soldiers left within the Scottish empire. The sudden disappearance of the crowd made the people believe in the ghosts and ghouls in the Edinburg Palace.

These deaths in the palace, the piper, the disappearance of the soldiers and workers were gradually forgotten but after some years, the locals started to report that they heard the sound of pipes and the cries of a lady and a man on their way toward the castle. Interestingly most witnesses said that it sounded as though the sound of the pipes was actually coming from underground and the shrieks and cries from inside the castle.

It is said that if we cross the path even today, we can hear the noise of the pipes above all the noises of Scotland’s traffic. Those who were unaware of the incident have also come to know about it by hearing the sounds and cries. The phantom piper has become a terror and the ghosts of the dead still haunt the castle.

The Second Phase:

These rumors continued until the early eighties. The Scottish government, along with their team of research and development and modern technology used their technology declared that there was nothing foul about the castle. All of a sudden, due to the Scottish government’s declaration, the Edinburg Castle turned into a tourist location. It became a rage among the tourists as well as among the locals. The Scottish Government took authority regarding the maintenance of the castle, as it was a huge source of foreign exchange for them.

The Edinburg Castle is one of the most visited sites in the world. It was one of the contenders in the race to the wonders of the world. This worldwide sensation gets as many as 500000 tourists every quarter. The Castle is now open to all and contains a museum, which displays the deadliest incidents of the Castle. Though nobody seems to care about the incidents in the museum, sometimes the sound of the pipes underground and the cries in the castle are heard even today.]]>
