Swapping Passwords: New Sign of Trust?

teenager on social media

In an age, where teenagers keep themselves pre-occupied with social networking websites, a whole new trend of sharing passwords has been noticed. Is it an emerging sign of trust among teens or an underlying invisible threat lurking overhead?

Why is it becoming popular?

Pew Survey found almost 30% teens following this particular trend. And they have no qualms or worries! In fact, most of them associate sharing it with reposing trust on their partners. Most of them even logs in with similar password for their Facebook, email and several other sites. Promises, fidelity, trust have been thrown to back seat. It’s password, which is the prime element of trust amongst teen these days.

For suspecting and possessive partners, who would not like to germinate even an iota of doubt in their mind, passwords are parallel to uncompromising fidelity. They believe in the notion of ‘If you are in a relationship, you should not hesitate to share everything with your partner’. For a few teenage girls, sharing password is equivalent to giving in to sexual requests of her boyfriend.

Why it can be horrifying?

What’s actually horrifying is teens are very much unpredictable. If things go haywire, they would never give a second thought before tampering each other’s accounts. Most of the parents feel teenagers can never stay affixed to their own decisions. Apart from that, they rarely pay attention to what their parents suggest. Instead, they dismiss these as useless bragging. Sharing password makes one vulnerable to potential threats of hacking, spamming etc., something which teenagers hardly understand.

Securing the online vault

It’s true that trust matters more than anything in a relationship. But teens need to understand that affairs of real life can’t be compared to a password which is nothing more than mere key of virtual life. Therefore, it’s highly recommended for teenagers to act mature by confining password to them. This would definitely prevent shaping up of untoward happening.
