Simple yet effective money saving window maintenance tips

Are you taking proper care of your windows? Well, maintaining windows does not only mean replacing them as and when required. If you take some basic preventive measures, it would not be a difficult task for you to keep your windows intact for long. Here are a few simple yet effective money saving window maintenance tips for you:

Refurbish Window Frames

When it comes to maintaining windows, restoring and renovating wooden frames is considered as one of the most significant tasks. As long as termites do not attack these frames, you can easily bring them back to its initial position with some simple cleaning and repairing.

  • If you find that moisture has damaged a few sections of the wood, just dig those parts out with the help of a screwdriver.
  • For removing the mold from the surface of the wooden framing, prepare a solution by mixing water with non-hazardous oxygen bleach and make use of it.
  • There might also be cracks and holes in the frame. An appropriate wood epoxy would help you fill them up. After that, apply a good quality wood protectant on it.

Paint Window Frames

Restoring wooden window framings is not enough to enhance the life span of your windows. As the upper protective layer wears away, the frames become more prone to damages. Hence, painting them once every 2 years is essential.

  • Choose a high-quality acrylic paint for your casements. Make sure that it is water-based. Otherwise, you would have to face peeling every now and then.
  • You can also opt for certain types of acrylic-urethane paint blends available in the market. Being exceptionally long lasting, these products offer excellent results.

Maintain the Window Glass

After the framing, it is time to focus on the glass. Your window glasses can be made of fiberglass (also known as Glass-Reinforced Plastic or GRP), vinyl (or etheynyl) or aluminum. None of these is affected by moisture. So, you do not need to worry about protecting these from rotting. However, cleaning window glasses in a regular manner can help you keep up their durability for long.

Always use a non-toxic chemical to clean both surfaces of glasses. Application of mild detergent solution is also good for this purpose.

Seal Unexpected Openings

Water infiltration can cause severe damages to your casements. It is of utmost importance that you seal each small opening in between the framing and the window properly in order to stop the seeping of water through them.

Invest in a good quality caulk and use it for sealing the cracks or other openings between the window glass and the wooden frame.
