Born in April 1894, Bessie Smith went through a real tough time when her father died right after her birth. The death of her mother and two brothers later in 1906 made her stay with her aunt. Bessie started performing as a street singer carrying a guitar in her hands. Singer Ma Rainey noticed her when she was performing in the Moses Stokes minstrel show. Her career took off after that.
