Rising pollution of Yangtze poses threat to plants and animals

yangtze river
Yangtze River, the world’s third largest river, has become one of the most polluted rivers of the world posing serious threat to animal and plant life. According to a joint Chinese-Swiss expedition supported by the Swiss Agency for Development, the analysis of the water quality of the 6,300 km long river revealed that 25 billion tons of waste is poured into the river every year.

In spite of the enormous level of pollution, the concentration of pollutants in the water is comparable to other major rivers of the world owing to the enormous rate of water flow. The large volume of pollutants is generated from huge quantities of mineral fertilizers used in agriculture and from heavy metals, as industrial wastes are disposed into the Yangtze. The amount of nitrogen in the river has doubled over the last 20years.

The concentration of pollutants including nitrogen and arsenic in the river delta is detrimental to the lives of animals and plants. As more nitrates enter the sea, more blue-green algae will grow reducing the level of oxygen in the East China Sea.
