Recycling is a valuable life skill

It is very important to understand the environmental benefits of recycling. It is the need of this hour and even small kids should realize un the necessity of recycling. They should understand that recycling the waste materials is an essential part of life so that sustainable development can be carried on. It is important for everyone to learn its implications and reuse the items that can be recycled as it opens a wider way to enhance renovation. This life skill should be inculcated in kids. It’s a fun activity, too.

The kids are globally and socially more conscious than others. Hence, here are some great ideas that you can teach your children. Teach them the ways to do it, its importance and how recycling can help in the coming future.

1. Make it a game

Children like to toss recyclable materials that are put into the bins in your homes. Pile up and line all the items that can be recycled and open up the mouth of the bin. Let your children play with these unbreakable recyclables like plastic and cardboard. You can also lay out the recycling and then check that who puts the recyclables into the correct bin at the earliest. In case you have loads of items that are not heavy weight like tissue box, yogurt tubs or cereals, then see that how high your kids can stack them up before dumping them into the bin.

2. Crafts, arts and other projects

It is not necessary and important that each child should enjoy craft work yet there are a lot of options and ideas for everyone to carry out recycling activities and indulge in those activities to the fullest. A parent knows well if his child has artistic abilities. And if your kid likes craft and is drawn towards artistic side then you can easily hand over the recyclables to him so that he can work on them and give them a new look that can be gifted later to his friends or can be placed at the guest room. You can also share your ideas and help the child to work on the same. For example, ask him to paint a plastic bottle or a glass with the color that he likes. On drying he can decorate this piece with some colorful beads and many other decorative materials including glitters and small glasses. When the craft work is done, you can use it as a vase and showcase it in the drawing room or you can also use some plastic containers and small boxes as a pencil stand and keep it on your study table. A thin cardboard or hard and stiff cardboard can be used as little boxes by cutting them into four squares and then joining all the sides with glue.

If machines are something that can drive your kid crazy, then you can take a corrugated plastic cardboard and then cut it well to make gears. Mount them with the help of pins onto the cardboard boxes so that the gears can be moved.

3. Visit the recycling center

Let your child know all the facts about recycling. Arrange a visit to a recycling center. Talk to the person in-charge if you wish to provide the complete set of details to your child but in case you want to make it a short visit then simply take him and show how recycling is done. Give him the relevant information as in how new items are generated from the older ones. Show him the center bins and tell them what kind of materials are thrown away.

Organizing a trip to the recycling center will get your child to interact with the people working over there and he can also see the machines and other tools that are used to recycle the items. Tell them that recycling is not a cakewalk or a magical move but it takes a real hard work and efforts to achieve the desired results. Participation of all is welcomed at every step.

4. Visit a dump or a landfill

Visuals can prove to be everlasting when it comes to teaching via this method. Take your child to the dumping grounds and landfills and show them the piling up of the garbage. Let them experience the foul smell coming from there. Tell them that carbon dioxide gas is emitted as the garbage rots and this pollutes the air. Do not mix up the things. Just tell them the basics in simple language.
