Nurturing responsibility among kids through household chores

Kids should be given household chores to inculcate the right kind of attitude towards a given task. It is important that we assign them with daily or weekly chores and watch them explore, react and fulfill the assigned work on time and in a proper manner. This might demand a lot of patience and endurance in the initial days, but once your child gets the hang of his duties, he would not only enjoy his small errands, but will also start looking forward to them. Start with assigning small light duties, so that he might not feel over-burdened with his newly discovered duties. If, on the other hand, kids are not taught to do these little household jobs, they will never develop the habit of dispensing such duties and will always be dependent and expect others to do their day-to-day work.

Why kids should be assigned with chores?

1. It teaches them responsibility

Education, in any form, begins at home. Our duties as parents does not come to an end by just admitting our children to the best possible school in town or by meeting their endless demands, it is also our responsibility to make our little ones responsible as well. Making them understand their priorities and actions in the form of small jobs, allotted to them, can nurture this factor in our little angels. Moreover, if they realize that you are dependent on them for a particular work, they will feel emotionally bound to finish that work on time, thus inculcating a sense of responsibility in them.

2. They are going to need it later

As responsible individuals, our children also have to learn to do their household work on their own when they grow up, so why not start teaching them now. Laundry, dishes, vacuuming, cooking and sorting the reusable – all these are necessary and inevitable chores in the lives of one and all. Beginning to train them early in this sphere, can prove to be very fruitful later on in life.

3. Teaches them patience

Patience is a virtue, and it is very important for everyone to learn this moral lesson for a successful and hassle-free life. Daily or weekly chores can prove to be a stepping stone in teaching this aspect of life to your child in a very silent manner. As generally very boring, your little one might put his foot down to indulge in his daily chores in the beginning, but, with time, it will help him develop patience and tolerance in dispensing them dutifully and perfectly.

4. They’ll take pride in a job well done

Never forget to praise or reward your child if he has managed to fulfill his jobs nicely, this will help boost up his self-esteem and make him toil further for better results in future. He will learn his lesson of striving for any thing and to excel in the same.

5. Lazy- daizy

Engaging your child in small household duties will mean putting him into action and on the move, thus avoiding him from lazing around on the sofa all the time or sitting glued to the idiot box or computer or game boy at any given hour. Physical movement will also help burn some extra calories and make your child fit and fine.

6. They’ll discover hidden talent

Sometimes, these uninteresting little jobs can prove to be really helpful in discovering your child’s hidden talents which they might explore further and pursue as a career later on in life. May be, engaging your daughter in cooking or your son in sorting recyclables, can assist them in inventing their profession as a chef or green energy saver.

7. We could use the help

Gone are the days when the women used to engage themselves only in household activities, confined to the four walls of a house. In modern times, a career oriented woman has to look into all indoor and outdoor spheres of livelihood, making it over-burdening and frustrating at times. In such situations, with a couple of children around, one can easily shed off and shift the burden from one’s head and allocate it to her small army of helpers.

In a nut shell, no work is small and no shame should be felt in doing our own house-work, if this is well drilled in the minds of our young learners, they will never try to escape or run away from chores allocated to them and can learn the lessons of life in a better manner.
