Nature’s Fury: Strong earthquake jolts Mexico’s Chiapas State

Now and then nature reminds us of its violent side. And the latest to feel its fury is Chiapas State, Mexico. Panic and chaos prevailed when 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the region on July 6. As a precautionary measure people rushed outside from their home. The epicenter was about 25 miles from the state capital Tuxtla Gutierrez. Though no casualty has been reported so far but some buildings and business establishments have been evacuated and people are being forced to seek shelter outside. However, there are some cases of minor injuries.

Tremors also brought electricity and mobile telephone services to a standstill and administration is still struggling to restore these basis services.

Emergency services in Chiapas said:

We were sweeping the area to look for damage around the epicentre, close to the border with the neighbouring state of Oaxaca.

It seems that the affected area is ‘in’ for some tough time for quite a while. In 2005 the same region has badly hit by Hurricane Stan. A kind of fear has gripped the residents as Hurricane season is about to begin and they are fearing the worst.
