Mozambique to turn crocodile menace into business

Talk about business ideas! A Mozambican company has hatched a brilliant idea to breed crocodiles and export them to neighboring countries, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The crocodiles are to be sourced from the Tete province, where the crocodile population has increased in recent years.

Manuel Santos, a provincial government official told AFP,

Fishermen in the valley of River Zambezi in central Tete Province are set to collect crocodile eggs in coordination with South Africa breeders.

There have been thirty deaths from crocodile attacks in the region this year. The crocodiles are also a menace in other ways, destroying food crops and cultivable land in their search for food. With this business proposition, the crocodile menace could be turned into a profitable venture.

The crocodiles that are exported to South Africa and Zimbabwe will most likely end up being killed for their skins, which are used to make shoes, boots, belts and jackets. There is a growing market in Europe for such products.

The crocodiles would be sold for prices ranging between $35 and $100. In 2006, some 17,000 crocodiles were exported from the same project, which had been operated by an Argentinian national since 2000.
