Motithang Children’s Park

environment conscious

World over, people are becoming environment conscious. Everyone, today is aware of the harm that the depleting Ozone layer can cause, it truly does have a lot of negative effects. We as adults, want to ensure that the younger generation have a safe environment tomorrow. All of us, are therefore doing our bit to make Mother Earth, a safer place for our kids. One such initiative has recently been  taken up  by Bhutan’s Ozone Ambassador, Her Majesty Gyaltsuen.

On her recent visit to the Chang Bangdu School in Thimpu, she educated the children on the Ozone Layer Protection, and what all should be done to raise awareness about the same. On the same visit, she announced the renovation of the famous “Mothithang Children’s Park” in Bhutan. In the afternoon, Her Majesty visited Lungtenzampa middle secondary school, where she addressed students on their role in protecting the ozone layer. Her Majesty also visited several schools in Thimphu in the past few weeks as part of the advocacy program. The park will be renovated in a manner such that it is more eco-friendly and healthy for the Ozone layer. Artist Rinchen Wangdi, who designed the concept of the park, said the existing concrete playground will be replaced with eco-friendly materials, like the ones in the coronation park in Changlimithang.

The park’s concept was inaugurated by Her Majesty Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck, as the ozone ambassador, at the celebration of the World Ozone Day at Dechenchholing palace yesterday. The park’s renovation is initiated by National Environment Commission. At the event, various ministries and organisations made pledges to phase out use of harmful substances like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) that deplete the ozone layer.

Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen expressed gratitude to world leaders, governments, and extraordinary people, who have contributed greatly towards the common goal of overturning the depletion of the ozone layer. “What we’d like to see is our ozone works have multiple benefits to the environment, such as combating climate change through the practical and simple way of being energy efficient,” Her Majesty said. The 25th anniversary of Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer was also marked the same day. Montreal Protocol is an international treaty designed to protect ozone layer by phasing out production of numerous substances believed to be responsible for ozone depletion. The treaty was opened for signature on September 16, 1987, and came into force on January 1, 1989. Senior regional coordinator of United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) ozone action, Atul Bagai, said Bhutan is a shining example, because of its commitment to take an extra mile in phasing out ozone damaging HCFCs by 2005.
