McDonald’s, a company that has been constantly criticized for its negative nutritional and environmental impacts, is attempting to improve its image by opening an energy-efficient restaurant that features LED lighting. The new restaurant at Saltbox village shopping center in Cray, North Carolina is the first LEED certified McDonald’s in the state.

The eco-friendly McDonald’s building has a completely automated, intelligent lighting-control system. Cree LED lighting and daylighting from Solatube skylights with a photo sensor to maintain the desired light levels on work surfaces lights up the building. Cree’s Led products can be seen all over the place be it the kitchen, the dining area, restrooms, hallways, the entryways or the parking lot.

The McDonald’s located at the site was demolished and rebuilt to obtain a building that incorporated all the necessary features to attain LEED certification from the US Green Building Council. The store uses 97% LED lights that reduce the total electricity consumption by 78%.
