Lichens to help produce next-gen sunscreens

3elm lichen
Tapping the UV blocking and antioxidant quality of lichens, scientists have found a way out for making effective sunscreen lotions. Harmful effect of UV rays is known to all but commercial sunscreens available in the market are not efficient enough to block UV rays. In order to overcome this drawback scientists, in Chile and Germany conducted a study on purified compounds from five different types of lichens. It was discovered that compounds succeeded in absorbing Ultraviolet B and C radiations. Researchers found a compound named calycine that was able to absorb UVA radiations, which is the main cause behind melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

Robust traits of Lichen:
Lichens are made up of fungus and algae, existing together in a symbiotic relation. Its highly resilient quality allows it to withstand extreme conditions. In order to study its resilient power, samples of lichens were sent into the space on board Russian Soyuz rocket. They were returned to Earth in perfect condition after an intense exposure to strong radiations and vacuumed space for 15 days.

Skin cancer facts:
Skin cancer is on a rise as depleting ozone layer is unable to shield sun rays effectively. In UK, skin cancer is responsible for more than 2,300 deaths per year and the rates of melanoma have quadrupled since 1970. It is advised by dermatologists that people with pale skin should wear sunscreen when ever out in the sun. Though, we tend to have a laid-back attitude on cloudy days but it has been found that up to 80% of the sun’s rays can penetrate clouds, mist and fog and hence, one can still get sunburn on a cloudy day.
