Kenya’s eco-tourism plans to fight global warming

kenya

Kenya, a popular destination beckons travelers to experience its great safaris, pristine white beaches and exotic wildlife. Whether it is the wild life, forests, lakes, beaches, or deserts, there is so much to see and so much to do for everyone in this beautiful country. The $1 billion dollar tourism industry is all set to transform itself into a popular eco-tourism destination.

The tourism industry was urged to take steps by introducing eco-friendly measures and adopt sustainable practices. The new certification criteria will ensure that that compliance with measures aimed at mitigating global warming is included so that the tourists can compare the green credentials of the facilities.

The proposals include using renewable energies such as solar and wind power, serving guests with local cuisine created from locally sourced products, using eco-friendly products within the resorts and hotels, replacing high-energy activities such as game drives with nature walks. Replanting trees in depleted areas will be encouraged to offset carbon emissions.

Tourism is the top revenue generating sector in Kenya. The industry expects their ‘green’ measures to bolster its revenues in return.
