Instilling kindness and compassion in your child

happy mother and son at sea

Kindness or compassion is a value that makes our lives joyous and meaningful. It is a quality that gives happiness to the person who follows it, and certainly to the ones who receive it. Compassion has such a positive impact on our lives that nobody should ignore and should try to inculcate in life. This is why parents want their children to develop this value and become good human beings further in life.

It is not that easy to pass on this value to children as the world today is filled with so many negative feelings such as selfishness, indifference, and narcissism, that it has become hard for parents to save their child from the negative influence. Compassion is a feeling that children do not learn on their own, rather it requires great efforts of parents to instill this wonder value in kids. Without the extra effort of parents, children cannot score well on this particular feeling.

Parents are supposed to nurture the compassion and kindness in their children since their early years. It is not only parents though, compassion should be there in every single member of the family, and then only the child gets the right message. Parents can use a plethora of activities and examples to teach kindness to children. Therefore, it is easy for parents to teach, and easy for the children to learn this value through a wide assortment of examples and messages that make this value loud and clear. Following are certain things parents should do to make their child a compassionate human being:

Live a life filled with compassion

Parents can only influence their kids on something if they themselves respect and follow that principle.

In order to teach your kid kindness, you yourself have to lead such a life wherein you perform some acts of kindness. If you do so, your child would automatically get a message that kindness is something good, which even he should also follow, and eventually he would introduce the value in his own life as well. Children notice their parents a lot and tend to copy their behavior.

If parents display a compassionate life, such as travelling a long distance just to help your relative, or taking out time for some charity work, your children will automatically learn such things from you, their role model. Many other day-to-day activities can teach your child how to live a compassionate life. For instance, talking to a waiter at the restaurant or a helper at home nicely, taking care of the old people at home and helping old people in streets, taking care of pets and being nice to even stray animals, and similar behavior.

Have conversations on compassion with your children

When your children are small, teaching compassion through activities is good, but when they grow up you need to talk to them about compassion. You need to tell them everything about the importance of kindness in a person’s life. Give them examples as to how compassion is important to make your, your families, and for that matter the life of entire world blissful. You can teach your child to be kind by being good to his siblings, helping his grandparents, and by helping the community through charity like giving away his old toys and clothes.

Engage your child in compassionate activities

The best way to teach a kid kindness is to engage them in such activities. Parents should encourage children to do charity for both humans and animals, teach them to take care of their younger siblings with care, and teach them to talk to everybody properly.

Summary

Kindness and compassion is an important value that nobody can do without. People who follow and respect this value in their lives are certainly happier than the ones who do not consider it important.
