Got the foodie fever? Then get a kitchen to match

get a kitchen to match

You’re a veritable Gordon Ramsay in the kitchen, rustling up culinary delights, tantalising taste buds and merging food styles with the pioneering spirit of Christopher Columbus.

Either that, or you like to bung a ready meal in the microwave, wait for 10 minutes, then sit in your pants and watch Game of Thrones with the processed gunk on your lap.

No matter how much of a foodie you are, the kitchen is the linchpin of your home, providing you with the sustenance you need to start the day – and the comfort food to finish it.

So why do so many kitchens have such shoddy designs?

If you look around yours and see an obstacle to your cooking, then try a few of these design tips.

Fantastic flooring

Imagine having white carpeting in your kitchen. It’s the equivalent of handing your carpets a death sentence. After a month, it’d be smeared in spaghetti stains, ground-up rice, rotten cereal and other gunk that will take more than some stain remover to wash out.

The sensible kitchen designer knows to put effective linoleum or marble flooring down to avoid crumbs becoming a blight on their floors. And, for added stain protection, place a few machine washable kitchen mats around those crumb hotspots to make them easy to clean.

Space is sacred

The worst factor in a kitchen is having minimal space to prepare your food. If you’re anything like this writer, you’ll enjoy having plenty of worktops to separate your ingredients and create those epic meals.

Make your appliances compact if you want to optimise space, and ensure you worktops are always clean enough to avoid nasty germs and bacteria.

Keep appliances optimal

You’ve got your fancy blender, 10-second toaster and a microwave that could warm a meal in a heartbeat – but are your core appliances up to scratch?

Ovens, fridges, freezers and washing facilities should all be at their optimal level. And although it can be pricey to overhaul these main elements of a kitchen, it will also improve the quality of your cooking and storage.

Ensure your appliances have a low energy rating, a high number of options and are up to industry standard for a kitchen to put Gordon Ramsay himself to shame.

Waste not, want not

A poorly placed bin can be the root of poor hygiene in a kitchen. Having it too near food prep areas, for instance, could lead to a disgusting spread of bacteria in your foodstuffs, and even lead to bugs and insects appearing around your kitchen.

Try to isolate your waste from other areas of your kitchen. And, if you want to be eco-friendly, ensure you’ve got the correct bins for separating waste, which can be collected from your local council.
