Goal Lists: Realistic Goals vs. Big Dreams

Realistic Goals vs. Big Dreams

Goal lists are important to keep yourself motivated and not lose sight of the future. If you’re wanting a new, custom patio from Hiner Outdoor Living but don’t have the funds yet – add it to your realistic goal list. Should you dream about traveling the world, jot it down on your big dreams goal list.

We’re going to talk about the 2 different types of goal lists: realistic vs big dreams, and what you should keep in mind while writing them.

Realistic Goal List

Creating a realistic goal list comes with a lot of self-reflection. You need to contemplate your values and desires as they stand right now before starting on this important piece of paper. Writing out goals that you view as possible will help to get your mindset on accomplishing them.

Once you have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish, it’s important to return to your goal list daily. The morning would be the best time to look at the list you created for yourself. This will start your day with positive motivation. You’ll have a clear vision of the steps you are taking to get to your destination.

What to Include

Start your realistic goal list with bullet points. For example, if you want a new car, write out “new car.” You begin crafting your personal list by jotting down the big picture, and you’ll fill in the details once you’ve completed this step.

After you have your bullet points on paper, you should start filling them in with more specificity. Returning to our new car example, you would add, “new car – Model Tesla Y.” If your goal is less specific like improving your relationship with a spouse, you could write: “improve relationship with spouse – more open communication, more date nights, more trips together.”

You will adjust your list according to what your goals are. They may get more specific overtime, and that’s normal. However, you don’t want to get too specific at the start, as that may steer you off course.

Big Dreams Goal List

Here is where you get to have fun and let your imagination run wild! No dream is too big when it comes to your big dreams goal list. We want you to be delusional when crafting your list of dreams. Keeping a goal list that has your wildest fantasies takes you one step closer to making them a reality.

It’s important to keep in mind not to get too hung up on these dreams, however. This list is simply a fantasy (for the time being), and getting anxious about making them happen will set you back. In a way, it’s a time for you to daydream. Once you start moving closer to these big dreams becoming a reality is when you would move them over to your realistic goal list!

What to Include

The world is your oyster! You can include whatever you want on your big dreams goal list. Similar to your realistic goals list, you want to start with a general idea of what your goals consist of.

A big difference with your big dreams goal list is that you won’t be as specific when it comes to it. Give yourself an overview of what your perfect life would look like. You can have your list read more like a story than an outline for what you want to play out in your life. Return to your big dreams goal list as often as you want!
