Global warming – an alarming reality of Bhutan

When scientists keep warning us every now and then about the hazardous consequences of global warming, many of us dismiss it off as something that will take years to turn into reality. But the threat of floods, change in monsoons and rain patterns adversely affecting agriculture, increasing general temperatures, appearance of malaria and dengue fever that usually affect warmer places, and eventually the threat of closing down on hydro-electric power generation that have put Bhutan in the clutches of an impending natural peril; are all due to global warming. It is high time that we wake up to this reality and do something about it.

Global warming is causing the Himalayan glaciers to melt and thus flood the lakes of Bhutan. India and China are the main contributors in this region.

So how can you reduce the effects of global warming? Its simple. First of all follow the three Rs, namely Recycle, Reuse and Reduce waste. Use disposable and eco-friendly material like paper. Avoid using plastic, as much as possible. Insulating the walls and doors of homes and even maintaining moderate temperatures can save upon 25 % of your heating expenditure by lowering the amount of energy needed to heat or air-condition your home. You can use compact fluorescent light(CFL)bulb instead of regular light bulb as it is ten times durable, uses less than two-thirds energy, and emits 70 % less energy than a regular bulb.

The next thing that you can do is reduce your driving. The gases emitted are the major causal factors of the greenhouse effect. Try riding a bicycle instead. It is good for the environment and your health as well. Buy vehicles and household equipment that are energy efficient. Turn off any electrical equipment when not in use. Your electricity bill will not only be kinder on your pocket, but a lot of heat energy emission can be avoided. Plant and conserve greenery wherever and whenever you can.

Bhutan alone is not the victim of global warming. Parts of North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia face a potential threat of global warming. Hence it is high time we geared up for the crisis and did our best to prevent the occurrence of any hazard.
