Getting kids to exercise

Obesity in children is on the rise across the globe. While junk food can be blamed, lack of exercise is another major concern. Exercising has many health benefits and children need to have some form of physical exercise in order to maintain good health.

Tips for you

Parents can use these tips to help their children get out of their seats and begin performing some exercises.

  • Exercises and physical activity can be introduced when the kids are very young. This can be easily done by practicing it yourself and making them to do along with you. You can set some time in each day, when all the family members can exercise together and should be followed regularly.
  • Planning interesting physical activities like playing in garden, visiting parks, going for trekking, swimming, cycling on weekends can develop an interest for exercise among kids.
  • Screen time should be cut down and all sedentary activities like watching television, sitting and playing, etc should be limited and special importance should be given to physical and outdoor play.
  • For children who are more resistant or for girls in teens can be encouraged by providing comfortable ways of exercising like skipping, cycling or aerobics. They can be given some sedentary activities or screen time as a reward for some physical play.
  • Make sure your child gets to exercise apart from the time spent in school. You can consider taking coaching in specific sports like badminton, tennis, football or dancing if they have an inclination. This will make sure them have daily exercises and developmental activities for their health.
  • Talk to your kids about the importance of good health and the role of exercise in maintaining good health. Pay more attention to your physical activities and plan for a healthy nutrition and fitness plan for the family.
