Flood-devastated North Korea calls for aid

North Korea is under severe flooding and the lack of food continues to rattle its people. As food shortage becomes rampant, the fear of death and disease rises higher, North Korea calls for aid from across the world.

North Korea is suffering from severe deluge, thanks to sumptuous rains that the entire country is reeling under flooding. Food, water, medicine, shelter shortage has left many stranded. The disaster is one of the worst to embrace the country. Because the country almost remains in seclusion, the enormity of the events happening there can only be estimated.

Mostly a poor country, where people depend on agriculture, floods have been catastrophic as 16 per cent of the arable land used for growing rice, maize and soybeans is devastated. Thousand have died, hundreds missing, nearly 215,000 people starving and as they call for aid from across the world, UN sanctioned $14.1 million out of which only 50 per cent has been financed, along with medicine and oral dehydration salts and water purification tablets.

The year 2007 will be remembered for the untold misery bestowed across the globe in the form of natural fury. Be it Asia, Africa, America, Australia or Europe, all the continents leaving Antarctica have felt the heat of the weather.

Extravagant rains across almost the entire globe have posed problems for life on earth. But, the intriguing question remains, why such a sudden and intense change in climate? Is global warming to blame? As scientists try plugging the loopholes to look up the conjugal relation between warming and the present climate, one thing is sure that the rise in global temperatures have altered climate to this extent. North Korea’s suffering too comes from here.
