Better Place displayed its automated battery swap system where its $500,000 gadget is capable of replacing dead battery of EV cars with a fully charged set. The technology will make it possible to travel long distances without the hassle of frequently recharging batteries. The whole system consists of battery exchange stations, where swapping of batteries takes place. The main aim baking the project is to make the switch of a battery faster than filling your tank. As per the test-conducted swap system is capable of making the switch within one minute. Better Place is the proprietor of the batteries and charging infrastructure wherein subscriptions’ sold to the consumers is going to be in accordance with cell phone plans.
The battery exchange station uses robotic shuttles that removes depleted battery for recharging and replaces it with a fresh battery. The battery shuttles can swap batteries of varied sizes. Driver needs to pilot the car up the square shaped ramp as the batteries lie on the underside of the car. Large solar photovoltaic array charge up the batteries wherein allowing zero-emission driving.
Better Place expects a market roll out in 2011 with around 100 battery swap stations in. According to its expansion plan, it hopes to replicate it in Denmark, Australia, California, Hawaii and other locations where it has forged alliances with governments.
If it gains popularity in near future, imagine how much less greenhouse gas would we put into the atmosphere.
