Effect of single parenting on the academics of a child

Effect of single parenting

Despite growing up within the domain of single-parent family has been viewed frequently as a risk factor when it comes to the child, today single-parent families have become fairly common. Single parent families more frequent than not comprises of a mother and a child whose biological father does not live with them under the same roof. Akin to parent education and income, the absence of the father is a major risk factor, which makes it rather tough for a child to succeed in academics.

Negative influence on grades

A child coming from a broken family or have been brought up under the guidance of single parenting are known for achieving lesser grades compared to their non-single parenting counterparts. The grades of these children through standardized tests, class work and homework proof to demonstrate this fact.

Their teacher’s report, however, may reflect another story altogether which can be due to the parent and the teacher tend to neglect the complete extent of the main problem that is being endured by such children. Thus, it is crucial in cautiously monitoring the progress of the child in a holistic manner for assessing every factor of their academic progress.

When a single parent is burdened to work full time to fulfil the needs of her child, they do not have the needed time for their child resulting in lower academic achievement and behavioural issues.

Single parenting is likely to influence the academic achievement of a child negatively as single parent means less time, doing the work allocated to both parents single handily, no time for checking papers from the school, attend school functions or help the child practice spelling.

Ray of hope

A successful marriage may not always improve the grades of a child, but may have a bad impact too. A child whose family is in transition is likely to score lower academically compared to a child who has been brought up in single parent home that is stable. As per research it has been proven that a child who comes from a single parent home, but receives regular support, love and guidance from the missing parent will perform higher academically compared to children who do not.

Although this has no connection with the single parenting ability of a parent with whom a child resides, but is another sign that the most major thing in single parenting both positive and negative impact on academics is not merely a matter of the parenting style, yet of time and income.

It has also been proven that typically single mothers offer more nurturing environment to their child compared to their male counterparts. These skills yield advantages to a child at school too.

Summary:

The research on the positive and negative impact of single parenting on a child’s academics is progressing, but the truth and secrets of raising a successful, well-adjusted student is nothing above than money.
