creating fashionable slipper socks from old sweaters and towels

Over 30 million pounds of clothes and textiles end up in landfills around the world annually. As an individual who cares for the environment, you would need to do your bit to prevent this from happening. And one way to do that is to stop contributing to this waste by recycling or repurposing your old clothes.

While you can hand over your old clothes to a charity or recycling center, there are plenty of DIY tutorials that tell you how to repurpose these old textiles. For instance, take a look at these pointers that show how you can make slipper socks out of old sweaters, sweat shirts and towels.

Sweater Slip Socks

You would need an old sweater for this in addition to other accessories like tracing paper, grip pads, scissors, darning needles, sewing pins and scrap yarn.

Start off by making an outline of each of your feet on the tracing paper. Leave aside an extra ½ inch on the edges for sewing purposes. Cut out the shapes and place them on the body of the sweater. Cut out the shapes on the sweater to create the sole pieces.

Stick your foot into the sweater’s sleeve and pull it up to the desired boot height. Cut off the rest of the sleeve from the sole of the foot to create the leg piece. Connect each leg piece with its sole with pins. Blanket stitch the pieces together. Once you have done that, turn over the material to form the slipper socks you can then wear for warmth on really cold winter nights.

Sweater Slippers

You can also use your old sweaters to make comfortable slippers for the winter months. You would need an old sweater, tracing paper and two pieces of felt.

Like in the previous tutorial, trace each of your feet on the paper and cut out the shape nicely. Trace the same pattern on the felt, making sure you trace each pattern twice for the midsole and sole. Place this foot pattern on the sweater and draw an arc around it, leaving ample space on the sides for sewing. Stick the felt pieces to the sweater, making sure you paste identical pieces on opposite sides of the sweater in proper alignment with each other. Stitch all around the pattern to connect the sole, material and mid sole together.

To make the plug, cut off the sleeve of the sweater and stitch the sleeves to close the opening. Make the other end round to resemble an egg. Place the plug at the top of the foot so that the pointed area faces upwards. Close in the sole from all ends with stitches until you get a look that resembles a slipper. While you can stop here if you are a novice, a more experienced individual can opt to make the slipper look more professional with appropriate cuts and tack throughout

Towel Slippers

If you have a couple of bath towels lying around the house, consider turning them into really comfortable slippers for the winter. All you need to do is follow the steps mentioned in the previous tutorials. You can use these slippers in the bathroom as well as they dry faster.

Sweatshirt Slip Ons

Don’t restrict yourself to just towels and sweaters when repurposing textiles for make socks and slippers. You can opt for other clothes like sweat shirts as well. Case in point: the following points that can help you transform an old sweatshirt into a really comfy pair of slip-ons.

Trace both feet on a tracing paper and cut out the pattern, leaving enough space on the sides for sewing. Place the cut patterns on the sweat shirt and cut them out. Cut out the sleeves of the sweatshirt (about 5 inches from the bottom end of the sleeve) and close the opening on one end. Place the cut sleeve on the pattern you cut earlier and stitch both the pieces together. Turn over the material and voila! Your very own sweat shirt slip on is ready for use.

Millions of pounds of clothing and textiles are sent to the landfills every day. Do your bit to save the environment by recycling your old clothes or repurposing them around the house with these handy tips.
