Report: China to participate in ‘post-Kyoto framework’ negotiations

To limit global warming after 2012, China – the world’s second-largest greenhouse gas emitter – will be taking part in negotiations on a framework, as the daily Yomiuri Shimbun reported on Saturday.

Beijing, in a joint statement, will be expressing its intention to take part in talks on setting up a post-Kyoto framework. The joint statement will be issued during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit to Japan from Wednesday, according to the daily Yomiuri.

In addition to this, Japan will also be announcing that it would help China by providing energy-saving technology assistance, according to the paper.

To make any post-Kyoto agreement successful, major greenhouse gas emitters such as China, India and the United States need to be on board, as been long said by experts.

Later this month, China is set to unveil its national plan to tackle global warming. The plan would include policies to cut back greenhouse gases, a top climate change official said in March. But, the official has declined to comment on whether it would give an overall national target.
