Are biofuels really helping the environment?

Less dependence on fossil fuels is a goal of many nations. To achieve this goal, the countries are using biofuels. There is ever increasing rush to promote biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel.

Biofuels have come into prominence as they are considered to be environment-friendly with reduced gas emissions but a report from Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) says that extensive use of biofuels may damage the environment significantly and perhaps even bump up food prices.

The report titled ‘Biofuels: is the cure worse than the disease?’ casting considerable doubt on the economic, social and environmental qualities of biofuels said biofuels may offer a cure that is worse than the disease they seek to heal.

OECD is the not the only one to question expansion of biofuels. Last spring a study from Canada’s Library of Parliament said Ottawa’s investments in biofuel would do little to cut greenhouse gas emissions. In July, a report from the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations said high demand for biofuels contributes to inflating food prices.

The OECD report said:

Biofuel policies may appear to be an easy way to support domestic agriculture against the backdrop of international negotiations to liberalize agricultural trade.

Suggesting governments to work on cutting demand for transport fuel rather than encouraging production of so-called green fuels and the OECD has asked nations to take keen steps forward to evade food-versus-fuel debate.
