A ‘united world’ can avert the worst of global warming: U.N. panel’s third report claims

‘We can avert the worst of global warming by getting united globally’. This is what a scientific panel sponsored by the U.N. will issue in its third study next month. But, how can that be done? According to the study, it would be possible by embracing technologies be it nuclear power or manure controls or rather anything between them.

According to The Associated Press, the draft report of the panel says that in deploying technologies in an effort to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, and warding off severe damage, the global economy might lose as little as 3 percentage growth points by 2030 and that too, under a best-case scenario!

The report also opines that, to cap carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases generated by industry, power plants and other sources, the governments of major emitters will have to join the Kyoto Protocol countries of Europe and Japan – be it the United States, China or India.

According to one of the authors of the report, British researcher Rachel Warren,

Governments, businesses and individuals all need to be pulling in the same direction.

Though the most expected growth in the emissions of greenhouse gases is predicted to come from the developing world, China and other poorer developing countries were exempted from the 1997 pact, while most of the solutions are expected from these countries.

And, with the Bush administration’s rejection of the mandatory cuts by the Protocol, contending their eventual slowing of U.S. economic growth to a huge extend, do the report-authors really expect the richest countries to go by the lines of the report’s global warming capping tips?
