Taking the lead in limiting the use of plastic bags, Wal-Mart – a public Corp Giant, is setting an example. The plan is to decrease and discourage the use of plastic bags as much as 25% in the US and 50% in other countries. Taking one step at a time, they are planting the seed of reusing and recycling in the minds of consumers. To bring about a global change, this kind of a move is always essential and has an impact that makes a difference.
Degradation and waste of plastic, metal, cement etc. are time-consuming processes and it takes a very long time for these substances to reach simpler forms, after which they can be termed as – if not extremely harmful to the environment, but nevertheless not safe either. The time period of degradation varies with substances, for example, natural food stuff take days and plastics take years. Depending on the kind of plastic and the amount used in different products like plastic bags, cups, bottles, the number of years increase, in decades.
It would help if global brands like Wal-Mart, Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Van Heusen etc. decrease or stop the use of plastic bags completely. Needless to say, more than these huge retailers, our own homes have more plastic bag varieties than anywhere else. It’s the duty of the consumers to say no to plastic, and always carry cloth bags while shopping and set a trend that way!
