5 tips to avoid whining in children

Children are innocent. But they are also clever enough to know what they want and how to get it. The most convenient way kids adopt in fulfilling their demands is to whine. Whining is nothing but throwing tantrums by moaning, crying, or even shouting. Sometimes parents get so bugged that they yield to the demands of their kids; not bothering how it can affect them in a wrong way. Whining is a form of emotional blackmail and the child uses it as a weapon. It’s high time that parents think ways to make their children stop using this tool and become more matured, so that they will grow up to be more honest and responsible. Here are five tips to stop whining from your children.

1. Accept that whining is normal in your child

Understand that whining is a perfectly normal behavior, irrespective of the age of your child. All children are alike when it comes to whining; however its variations can differ from child to child. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to find a child completely exempt from this behavior. If you accept your child’s behavior as normal, you will not be too annoyed when it happens and hence will be able to deal with it in a better manner. It will also prevent you from being stressed out. If you approach your child calmly, he/she is more likely to stop whining. Much of the problems you have with your children will be resolved if you understand the fact that they are simply being true to their nature.

2. Explain your child that whining is bad manners

Children are often unable to articulate their emotions openly and hence they resort to whining. They might not even be aware that they are whining or even what the concept of whining means. Explain what whining means and how it is considered to be a bad habit. Make your children aware that they must communicate to you in a proper way, if they want anything. But also make them clear that they will not be getting whatever they want and must understand that. You can even console them by saying that you would consider their wish if they stop whining.

3. Ignore the whining

Do not heed to your child’s whining and pay attention. Sometimes, as parents, we make a mistake of pampering our children and giving more attention than needed. You can tell your child to stop whining and explain to you properly what he/she wants. Pretend not to understand whining.

4. Do not yell at your child

Most parents try to stop the whining of their children by yelling or scolding them. This is not the proper way. Children understand us better if we speak to them in a low and friendly tone. They also, like adults, deserve respect and fair treatment. Scolding would only make them more stubborn. Hence be tactful and avoid yelling.

5. Do not punish your child

Most parents believe that a spanking will do good in stopping the whining of their child. This is a myth. Punishment does more harm than good to the child. It not only curb’s his mental development but also weakens your bond with the child. Understand the needs of your child and respond accordingly, It could even be possible that your child is whining as he/she is hungry, tired or is suffering from some physical discomfort.
