3 Simple Tips to Improve Your Well-Being

Improve Your Well-Being

Wellness is a matter of taking care of both your mind and body. It’s a holistic approach to health that involves making sure all the areas of your life are aligned. Below are three areas that you can take a look at to help you figure out where you can make improvements for your well-being.

1. Aligning Your Values

Does the life you lead reflect the values that matter to you? As an example, it can be helpful to look at your career and see if it’s contributing to the world based on what matters to you. This doesn’t mean that you have to be involved in something strictly altruistic. You could work in fashion design because you believe in bringing beautiful creations into the world or in agriculture because feeding people is important.

If you find that your values and your career are not in alignment, you may want to change the field that you work in. One great second career for many people who would like to do something constructive is working in health care in some capacity. You could go back to school and get a master’s degree in nursing. Private student loans can help you pay for your graduate medical degree or whatever type of higher education you may need for a career change.

2. Go to Sleep

a good night's sleep

When you think in terms of wellness, you might imagine making active choices, such as eating differently or exercising more. Sleeping more may not even enter your mind, but there are few things you can do that are as healing to your mental and physical well-being as work on getting a good night’s sleep most nights. Behind that regular good sleep is a program of what is often called sleep hygiene, which simply means doing the things that you need to go do increase the likelihood that your night of shut-eye will be a restful one.

You should plan to go to bed and get up at roughly the same time every day. If your going-to-bed time or waking-up time are altered on either end, you should still try to be consistent with the other time, even if it means you are a little tired one day. In the last hour or so before bed, you should start to unwind. This means turning off the TV as well as putting away your phone, your tablet and any other screens. Soft music and low lights are excellent ways to start relaxing and signal to yourself that it will be time to go to bed soon.

3. Connect With Others

Having social connections is another important element of wellness. If you struggle to connect with people and make friends, you could consider a recurring volunteer gig, looking for meet-up groups in your hobby area such as yoga  crystal guide for beginners or attending services based on your religion or spiritual practice. If you have plenty of family and friends nearby but you don’t spend enough time with them, make a point to reprioritize them in your life. This should mean seeing them in person or at least talking to them on the phone and not just texting.
