10 Top Adoption Profile Tips

When it comes to adopting a baby, adoption profile plays the key role in determining whether the birth mother will like to give you the responsibility or not. Your adoption profile must be strong enough to impress the prospective mother as there are many other couples, who like you, also want to adopt a baby. This does not mean that it is some sort of a race and you need to be the winner, we just want to convey that your adoption profile must represent you and your objective behind the adoption in the best possible way.

We have compiled a list of some tips which could help you in the development of your adoption profile.

1. The profile must be concise.

One important thing that must be always kept in mind is that your letter should be short, simple and to the point, this will be effective. Obviously, if ten words can do the trick then what’s the point in using twenty words. Try to organize your copy into short sections, such as “About Peter”, “About Rebecca”, “About us” etc. This will help you to represent your thoughts in a clear way and your profile will also be easier to read. You can even take the help from the internet, but don’t just copy the contents. Your profile must be just as unique as an individual as you are.

2. Compassion is a key element.

You must always remember that the person to whom you are writing is going through difficult times. You need to let him know that you understand his feelings and you are there for him. It’s important that you must be kind, caring and compassionate in your words and action both. Your insights will inspire him and your empathy will move him which will hopefully result in a good rapport.

3. Make it memorable.

Concrete details and anecdotes will help the prospective birth mother to understand you as a person and the birth mother will get better idea about you as a parent. Remember that action is more important than speech. For instance, its better to talk about the times when you took your nephew to the water park instead of saying that you’ll make great parents. Make sure that whatever you have written centers around the family and child. Try to covey some of the lesson you learned from your parents and you wish to pass on to your children.

4. Inject humor.

Humor is the best remedy to cut through the tension and put anyone at ease. Don’t be afraid to show your sense of humor if it comes to you naturally. However, in the context of adoption profile, humor doesn’t means those one liners and jokes which you often share with your friends. It simply means a detachment, a certain lightness to cut through some of the anxiety and stress which you and your reader must be going through at the moment.

5. Make it genuine.

We may have briefly discussed this point earlier but it deserves more attention. This is not a competition, there is no right or wrong way of writing an adoption profile. So you don’t need to get discouraged if some other person’s profile appears better than that of yours. No two couples are alike and so will be the letters. Besides this, you never know what a birth mother is actually looking in her baby’s future parents. She might also get impressed by your simplicity. All you need to do is to be honest and represent yourself the way, you actually are as a person.

6. Include photographs and captions.

Quite often it has been seen that the expectant parents make their initial judgement based on the photographs and captions which you put in your adoption profile, especially those which form the first set. These photographs frequently act as the determining factor when it comes to the dilemma of whether someone will read your profile or not. It has been observed that most of the prospective families spend much more time in the text section in comparison to the selection of the right photographs and captions. However, a well written profile is one in which equal importance has been given to photographs too.

7. Make it informative.

Discuss about your family and try to share as much as possible. You can even include your views and opinions on subjects like adoption and parenting. But try not to get too carried away as you are writing an adoption profile, not a thesis. If you already have a child, then try mentioning the difference that he has brought in your life. Describing the things which you do together as a family will help the birth parents the most in visualizing you as parents.

8. Remove all hints of desperation.

Make sure that you don’t sound desperate, it’s alright that you are excited about the arrival of a new family member and there is no harm in even showing your enthusiasm but don’t misinterpret this excitement with desperation as this would be the last thing that the birth mother would be expecting. The birth mother must not be under the impression that you want to adopt her child just to save yourself from a life of misery.

9. Show something unique.

Although, this is not an exam but still you need to differentiate yourself from others. If there is something unique about you, something that distinguishes you from others, then don’t hesitate in showing it. For instance, if you have a horse, show it, if you are a bilingual then write something in other language. All these little things often helps you to stand out of the crowd.

10. Make it accurate.

Now, that you are done with writing your letter, go back to the beginning and read it over to make sure that everything is just as you wanted them to be. If you think that some correction needs to be done then edit your letter accordingly. A well written letter will always leave a long lasting impression on the reader.
