World's first 'spinal transplant' conducted

backache 64Good news for patients with chronic backache as doctors come out with ‘spinal transplant’, carried out for the first time on a human being. No doubt, earlier too similar transplantation was conducted on primates but its practice on a human being has made it more convincing.

In this first of its kind ‘spinal transplantation’, spinal discs from accident victims were transplanted into patients with disc degeneration in the cervical spine, the area nearest the neck.

Experts believe that this spinal transplantation would come as a major relief to the patients with back problems because under typically used methods, usually artificial material is used to replace the defective discs, which further causes degeneration of the discs, leading to worst condition of the patient. As The Lancet says:

The pioneering treatment, carried out in China, offers hope for thousands of sufferers of severe disc problems, particularly young people.

It seems quite certain that spinal transplantation would change the way people with spinal problems are treated. Moreover, it would bring a major relief for the patients with disc problems.
