Western-style diet increases breast cancer risk

A recent study done on Chinese women in Shanghai, between the ages 25 and 64, suggests that a diet rich in meat and sugary food boosts the risk of breast cancer. In the study, American and Chinese researchers compared the dietary habits of 1,602 women with breast cancer with more than 1,500 women without breast cancer.
The researchers found that obese, postmenopausal women who ate a western-style diet rich in meats and sugary foods, were in the higher risk category, as compared to women whose diet mostly consisted of the traditional vegetable-soy-fish diet.
According to Marilyn Tseng, an associate member at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, this study is of great significance, as it gives valuable information of how the ‘meat-sweet’ diet interacts with obesity to enhance the risk of breast cancer in Asian women.
So, if low-risk Chinese women do not want to become more prone to breast cancer, they should keep a check on their weight, reduce their intake of meat and sweets, and eat more of their traditional meals rich in vegetables, soy-based products, and freshwater fish.
