Unhealthy diet as bad as smoking

According to the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), deficient eating of fish, fruit and vegetables causes most of the cases of major sickness and death. Bad dietetic habits cause as much health problems as smoking does.

Obesity reduces the 0.8 years of life expectancy in a 40-year-old Dutch person while Unhealthy diet reduces the life expectancy by 1.2 years. Nearly 70 percent of the population of Netherlands does not obey the recommendation level of eating fruits and vegetables. Poor diet claims nearly 13,000 deaths due to diabetes, heart disease and cancer in the country.
