UN Urges Immediate Action for Nigeria Bird Flu

The virulent H5N1 strain of the virus is affecting poultry in three states, Nigerian officials confirmed. The UN has warned, Nigeria must step up its measures to prevent further spread of the deadly bird flu virus. But how? Two UN world bodies opined, the government needs to clamp down on the trade in poultry and intensify culling and movement controls.

It is four weeks ago, chickens started dying! Though comparatively the emergency measures are taken quickly, for an endemic, it’s always too late? The Food and Agriculture Organisation and the World Organisation for Animal Health are urging neighboring Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Ghana and Niger to tighten border inspections. That seems to be a good move. A joint mission to Nigeria will be send by the agencies. And it is supposed to be made within 48 hours to assess the situation.
