People all over the world love to relish green tea, but now there are evidences that green tea is good only if it is consumed in moderate quality. These findings have come to the fore after reviewing the studies into the toxicity of polyphenols.

Polyphenol is the main substance in green tea. It has been concluded that polyphenols help in keeping cancer and heart diseases at bay only if green tea intake is not more than 10 cups a day. But going overboard may cause liver and kidney damage.

Lead author Chung Yang of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey said:

People shouldn’t be too alarmed by this, but those taking supplements may experience problems and up to 10 small cups of green tea a day is fine. Problems are likely in people who take supplements, which can contain up to 50 times as much polyphenol as a single cup of tea.

During the course of these studies it was noticed that rodents and dogs die from liver poisoning, when they were exposed to large doses of polyphenols. Even human beings complained of liver toxicity when they increased their polyphenol intake in the form of green-tea-based supplements.
