Tips to avoid munching at midnight

Tips To Avoid Midnight Snacking

Midnight hunger pangs are a common and irresistible situation. And when you know that the fridge is full of yummy goodies, it becomes a tough call to say ‘no’ to your growling stomach. Moreover, you always opt for the least healthy food available. As you gorge on the food and straightaway go back to your couch or bed, you feel satisfied and energetic. But the realization of weight gain only comes later. Thus, you need to avoid all the temptation of having snacks at midnight and go back to sleep. This can be done by following some simple tips throughout the day:

1. Stick to proper mealtimes
Midnight snacking is usually due to an unsatisfied appetite through the day. So, it is important for you to not miss a meal to stabilize blood sugar level and maintain a sufficient energy level. Eating small meals throughout the day might help. You usually feel hungry at night because a long time has elapsed between your dinner and the sleeping hour.

2. Do not skip meals
Our body needs energy even during sleep. Skipping dinner leads to sudden pangs of hunger due to low sugar level. So, it is important for you to have dinner rather than eating untimely at midnight.

3. Go for healthy snack options
If the cravings are unavoidable and you desperately need to eat, then grab healthy food items. You should not think about taste but health. So, avoid eating fat rich and high calorie food like chips, pasta, chocolates etc. Eat fresh fruits such as apples as they are low in calories, easy to digest, and provide instant energy. Fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals and bring down the craving for sweet taste. You can also eat yoghurt, whey, or drink a glass of milk.

4. Drink water
The first and the best thing is to drink a chilled glass of water. This gives a feeling of fullness and calms down the cravings.

5. Overcome insomnia
Some people fail to fall asleep at night. So, they find munching on food as an ideal past time. You should overcome these nocturnal habits and try to sleep on time.

6. Avoid caffeine
You should avoid drinking tea or coffee after dinner. It stimulates the body and hinders your sleep. Drinking hot milk is a better alternative.

7. Be creative
If you are not able to sleep at night then develop some interesting and creative hobbies like reading, listening to soft and soothing music etc.
