Smoking may delay fracture and ligament healing

Whereas smoking is injurious to the health of your lungs, it can worsen your orthopedic conditions too. This is the outcome of the studies that have been conducted in this regard. Through these studies, researchers have evinced that cigarette smoke contains numerous toxins, which may impede the healing process of fractured bones and healing process of torn ligaments. In addition, smokers have also higher chances of hip fracture.

In a study that looked at the impact of smoke on mice found that there is a direct relationship between smoking and cartilage formation. However, researchers believe that still there is requirement of further study to go deeper into the study.

No doubt, this conclusion has come to the surface after preliminary study. Still, I believe that this is an important disclosure, which may bring in a new ray of hope for thousands orthopedic patients.
