Pneumonia: Will the fight begin at home?

pneumonia
Suffering from pneumonia? Get ready to lie on a hospital bed. Yes! This was the common remark a person, struggling with pneumonia, would normally get from doctors and others. However, the situation seems to be taking a new turn now, in fact, a significant one this time.

Such assumption caught spark after experts in Pakistan found that treating children with severe pneumonia at home is just as effective as treating them in hospitals. Before coming up with such assumption experts carried out a study, involving around 2,037 children with s severe pneumonia were randomly assigned to get either injectable antibiotics in a hospital or antibiotic pills at home. Finally, what experts found was that of the five children who died during the study, four were hospitalized. This somewhere shows treating pneumonia patient at home would provide similar benefits that one can have at the hospital.

How far findings of this study are reliable, commenting on this would be a bit premature, yet. However, WHO has all the praising words for this finding when it (WHO) says:

The findings could significantly change the way the illness is managed in developing countries.

This assumption by the WHO is indeed plausible because pneumonia is still a major cause of deaths in the world, especially among children under 5 years of age. Ironically, in countries like US more than 60,000 Americans die of pneumonia, annually. Therefore, there is none denying that this finding might prove a major landmark in fighting pneumonia, globally.
