Over-exposure to sun can lead to Sun poisoning

If you go out in the sun, which is bound to happen in this hectic life, make sure you do not get sun poisoning.

Sun poisoning or Photodermatitis, as it is scientifically called is a condition that develops when your skin over reacts to Ultra Violet rays from the sun. The root cause of the problem is over exposure in the sun. Whereas, sometimes certain medications like antibiotics, certain skin products such as soap, sunscreens containing PABA, or certain fragrances may also cause photosensitivity i.e. increased sensitivity to UV rays.

Fever, vomiting, fatigue, nausea, chills, dizziness, headache, swelling, burning sensation, red itchy rash, small blisters, or peeling of the skin are few of the symptoms if one suffers from sun poisoning.

To avoid a skin reaction, avoid staying out in the sun during the brightest sun hours, from noon to 3pm. Moreover, be careful even during cloudy days. Just because it is cloudy, doesn’t mean one is protected, so one must always wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Apply it 20-30 minutes before going outside, and reapply it every 2 hours.

One always has the option of wearing lightweight long sleeves, pants, and a hat to protect skin from harmful UV rays. But one must be careful and avoid any chemicals that may trigger skin reaction.

Despite all this, if one thinks he is down with sun poisoning, he must consult his doctor. For first aid, a cool shower or bath can help relieve symptoms and apply aloe. Inhaling an anti-inflammatory such as aspirin may also reduce swelling, and help with nausea or headache.
