Organic Food: Myths and Reality!

When it comes to buying edible goods, usually the word ‘organic food’ reverberates now-a-days more often in our ears. However, it would not be wrong to say that a large percentage of people are still not acquainted with the concept of organic food. But, those who are well aware, before them a question emerges repeatedly that is organic food really a good choice for them or not.

While trying to reach a final solution, we came across contradicting views. Some experts say that the word ‘organic food’ has been used just as a publicity stunt to boost the sales of food products and nourishing this view, Dr. David Katz, associate clinical professor of public health and medicine at Yale University in New Haven, Conn said:

Organic can be a gimmick… for example, marshmallows could be organic, but so what? Organic Cheese Doodles could be made, but wouldn’t be nutritious.

Further, he says defending his view, ‘Sometimes ‘organic’ is used to make people think a product is wholesome.’

On the other end, people who define organic foods as the best eating stuff too are not scarce. I think, they do have a reason to say that because several reports published earlier have exposed that non-organic foods contain higher level of pesticides. And vindicating the same view, Dr. Philip Landrigan, professor and chairman of the department of community and preventive medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, avers, ‘There is no question that organic fruits and vegetables contain lower levels of pesticides than conventionally grown food.’

My personal view about the whole concept of organic food is that no doubt, environmental pollution, climate changes and rise in the use of pesticides have given us a reason to go for ‘organic foods’ because increase in the percentage of harmful chemicals, especially in our environment is constantly emerging as a major threat to our health. But, in heart of hearts, I also think that word ‘organic foods’ is also being used as a tool to carve out more and more money, especially by food chain industries. You can easily see inundation of food stuffs in the market wearing the name ‘organic foods’. While I think, none would deny that a big percentage of such food have nothing to do with ‘organic foods’ This trend brings the whole concept of ‘organic foods’ under the clouds of doubt. It is quite essential to define clearly, what organic foods are all about and people should be made aware profoundly about the concept of organic foods.
