According to a new study — it is found that omega-3 fatty acids can provide help in reducing blood pressure of a man.

Dr. Jeremiah Stamler, professor emeritus of preventive medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, who participated in the study, mentioned that a greater number of people who are aged between 20 and 60 show a rise in their BP, and by coming up to the middle age, most of them develop high blood pressure.

He also added that they are working on dietary factors which may provide help in preventing blood pressure rise and omega-3 fatty acids would be beneficial in this case, though in a very small amount but this is really important.

The researchers of the study looked on diet and its link with blood pressure in nearly 4,680 males and females, aged between 40 – 59, who live in Japan, China, Britain and US. The participants gave the each and every detail related to their diets and their drinking habits also gave urine samples and got their blood pressure measured.

The researchers then looked on to 17 different things that are known for affecting blood pressure count such as age of people, their gender, weight, salt intake and exercise and activity.

The researchers presented their report in the American Heart Association Journal Circulation. They said that the people who consume omega-3 fatty acids rich diets had low blood pressure in comparison to those who consume diets with low amount of the nutrients.

Dr. Hirotsugu Ueshima of Shiga University of Medical Science in Otsu, Japan said in a statement:

With blood pressure, every millimeter counts. The effect of each nutrient is apparently small but independent, so together they can add up to a substantial impact on blood pressure..

If one can lower his blood pressure by consuming low salt foods, shedding few pounds, avoiding drinks, consuming more and more vegetables, whole grains and fruits and receiving more omega-3 fatty acids, and then one could make a big difference.

Fish like trout, salmon and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

The study discovered that walnuts, flaxseed and canola oil are also considered to be rich in omega-3 fatty acids and people who get their omega-3 fatty acids from these sources got much benefit in comparison to those who get them by consuming a fish.

Omega-3 fatty acid consumption is also associated with the development of brain and reducing the chances of cancer and heart diseases.
