During the aging process, neural cells present in grey matter of brain shrinks thereafter get weaker and in turn becomes dead. In case of Alzheimer patients the shrinkage gets worse, specially in the memory area of brain. These patients have also a loss in brain volume due to the loss of neurons and other components of brain tissue.
People with poor memory have lower density due to abnormality that can be diagnosed with magnetic resonance microscopy (MRI). But it is not clear yet that memory loss gives fillip to Alzheimer. Brain imaging can be used to monitor the risk of Alzheimer disease in patients.
I think that people with frequent memory loss need to go for brain imaging and those with losing memory occasionally need not worry as rising age can be related to poor memory.
