Perhaps the most common cause of female infertility, the diverse as well as complex female endocrine disorder – the polycystic ovary syndrome – is growing worries among the medical fraternity with its number rising each year, adding to the already existing economic health burden of ‘obesity epidemic’.

Affecting 1 in 15 women worldwide, the disorder may lead to menstrual dysfunction, infertility, hirsutism (excessive body hair growth), acne, obesity, and metabolic syndrome – curing each of these in an individual will definitely multiply individual health expenditures.

According to the authors of the study,

Future priorities in relation to PCOS include the development of evidence-based criteria for diagnosis and treatment, and determination of the natural history, cause, long-term consequences and prevention of the disorder.

For women with polycystic ovary syndrome, obesity is a major risk factor and thus, it in turn can effect regular ovulation and fertility.

With the disease’s cause not yet clear, most researchers believe that more than one factor could play a role in developing it, genes and environment being the major factors.

And to add to the prevailing worrisome obesity problem, its increase may soon create financial havoc, bringing with it several women health complications.
