GlaxoSmithKline bans Seroxat, finally

GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Seroxat, an anti depressant drug, said that the drug may cause adults and children to become suicidal.

GSK earlier had denied any problem in the drug, now advices the doctors, all over Britain, about its potential risk in some adults. Seroxat has been already banned to use for children.

The health secretary, Patricia Hewitt, declared the end of the ‘Prozac nation’. It was a program to cut the numbers of patients on drugs such as Prozac and Seroxat.

Seroxat is the largest-selling SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) in Britain. GSK’s advice to doctors is the outcome of a reinvestigation of its trials. It was appealed by the US drugs regulator, the food and drug administration.

Seroxat has a severe extraction syndrome, which seems to me to be worse than other drugs in the group. These set of symptoms in its own right can be linked to people becoming suicidal.
