Stomach can only store low amount of food due to its small size and fragile condition so, the gastric bypass diet is designed while keeping these factors under consideration. There are 3 different phases through which the gastric bypass diet changes after the surgery. You move onto one phase from another as the condition of stomach gets better.

  • 1st Phase: Here, liquid foods should only be consumed. Juice, broth, cooked cereal and milk should be the only food for first 2 days.
  • 2nd Phase: Pureed foods need to be consumed consistently for 3 to 4 weeks.
  • 3rd Phase: Soft foods such as cooked veggies, fresh fruit, diced meat and similar foods should be consumed for at least 8 weeks.

Tips on Gastric Bypass Diet

  1. Small and light meals should be taken consistently.
  2. Take small sips of water and other liquid between the meals.
  3. It is good to have 6 small meals/day, later decrease it to 4 meals/day and finally bring it down to 3 meals a day.
  4. Protein rich food items such as eggs, lean meat and low fat dairy products are essential food items in gastric bypass diet.
