FDA gives green signal to silicone breast implants!

Once again silicone breast implants would be available in US, ending the awaited demand of most of the women. Food and Drug Administration has dropped the ban from silicone breast implants in US along with spurning away the claims that silicone breast implants cause long-term sickness. With this move of FDA, silicone breast implants would be available to thousands of women aging 22 and above. It is interesting to know here that ban on silicone breast implants has been dropped just a few days after health officials gave permission for this in Canada.

This drop of ban is being seen as a big lift up for surgery industry in US because silicon breast implants is the second most-popular cosmetic surgery procedure in US. The statistics of American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery denotes that about 365,000 women underwent breast augmentation surgery only in the year of 2005. I think this is adequate to explore the popularity of breast augmentation surgery.

Silicone breast implants was banned in the year 1992, amid the voices and evidences raised against it. Explaining the reasons that led to banning of silicone breast implants Dr. Michael Olding, chief of the division of plastic surgery at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington and a member of the FDA’s General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel avers:

The moratorium was put in place in 1992 by the FDA because they felt that there was insufficient evidence to determine if [silicone implants] were safe.

Dr. Michael Olding further says that the ban was imposed on Silicone breast implants not because they were unsafe but because at that time there was privation of necessary information that was necessary to keep it in the market. However, after this imposition of ban various studies were carried out that failed to draw out a correlation between silicone implants and the systemic diseases. Those who favor this move of FDA are calling it a victory for women.

It would also be wrong to say that every body has taken this drop of ban with open arms because there are a large percentage of people who’ve strongly opposed the move. The groups of such people say that there have been many cases indicating that silicone breast implants led to serious health related problems in women. Among such complications muscle cramps, severe fatigues, infection to unborn babies are most prominent. In various cases, silicone gel leaked out that often led to inflammation in the breast areas.

FDA is a very responsible organization that might have gone through all the pros and cons of silicone breast therapy before exonerating it. Moreover, there are a large percentage of women, who have gone for silicone breast implants in US and in Europe as well. And most importantly, the green flag that has been shown to silicone breast implants by the recent scientific studies sprouts out belief that silicone breast implants is safe fore women.
