Counseling or drug therapy with medical visits can reduce alcoholism

A major countrywide research in U.S. reported that counseling with medical visits or drug therapy along with medical visits — not both — reduces the drinking habits. The doctors of Brown University, found that just nine counseling of short duration in combination with naltrexone or intensive counseling give in good medical results.

Patients who made regular medical visits and medicated with naltrexone, which obstructs satisfaction receptors in the brain, improved the most. Experts say that the habits of drinking reduce only because of the regular treatment, regular review of the health of the patients and endowing them with support by the counselors.
